Today's Tip for Building Character in Kids: Self-Control

Encouraging Self-Control

Self-control involves regulating one's emotions, thoughts, actions, and desires. It's strongly linked to success and resilience in kids.

For children who struggle with transitioning between activities, using signals can help. Practice together and expect attention: "I need your attention in one minute." "Ready to listen?"

Teach "pausing prompts" for stressful situations to encourage thoughtful responses: "If you're angry, count to 10 before responding." "If you're unsure, stop, think, and cool down." "Don't say anything about others you wouldn't want said about you."
